For senior leaders, the idea of truly switching off at Christmas can feel impossible.
There’s always something urgent to handle, an email that “can’t wait,” or a project to finalise.
But here’s the truth: the work will still be there in January. The time with your family, friends, and loved ones won’t.
Christmas is a time for connection, joy, and recharging.
For moments that you can’t get back if you let them slip through your fingers.
As a leader, it’s tempting to see every demand on your attention as essential, but stepping away is a powerful act.
It shows that you value what matters most: the people you care about and your own well-being.
Here are three specific actions you can take to switch off so you can truly enjoy the magic of Christmas 2024.
1. Set Clear Boundaries Before You Log Off
Don’t just disappear from work—set yourself and your team up for success by communicating clear boundaries.
Before Christmas week begins:
Let your team know your “offline” dates: Be specific about when you’ll be unavailable and ensure they know who to contact in your absence.
Delegate what needs to be handled: Empower your team to make decisions. Trust them to handle the unexpected while you’re away.
The more you set expectations before you switch off, the easier it will be to fully disconnect—and the more confident your team will feel in stepping up.
2. Schedule Your “No-Work Zones”
This isn’t just about turning off notifications. Physically and mentally, create spaces where work can’t intrude. For example:
Designate work-free areas: Make your kitchen table, living room, or Christmas gatherings sacred spaces where laptops and work talk are banned.
Pick specific no-work times: Block time in your diary for Christmas morning, family meals, and evenings. You’ll be fully present for those irreplaceable moments without the constant pull of work distractions.
Being intentional about where and when you “switch off” makes it easier to resist the urge to check your phone or open your laptop.
3. Reclaim Your Energy with Micro-Rituals
The festive season can be just as draining as it is joyful, so protect your well-being by carving out time to recharge.
Even 10–15 minutes a day can make a difference. Here are a few ideas:
Take a walk alone: Whether it’s a crisp morning stroll or a quiet evening under the stars, this time is yours to reset.
Journal or reflect: Write down three things you’re grateful for each day—it’s a simple but powerful way to focus on what matters.
Create quiet moments: Listen to music, read a book, or meditate. Even in the busyness of Christmas, a little quiet can go a long way.
Why This Matters
The emails can wait.
The deadlines will still be there in January.
But these moments - the ones with your children tearing open presents, the laughter at the dinner table, or the quiet peace of a winter’s evening—are fleeting.
You won’t get them back.
By switching off now, you’ll return to work in the New Year as the confident, results-orientated, and talented leader you want to be.
You will be recharged, refocused, and ready to hit the ground running.
Give yourself permission to be fully present this Christmas. It’s the greatest gift you can give to yourself and the people who matter most.
