Every Organisation Invests in Leaders

Most organisations invest significant time and money in developing their leaders.

They create leadership programmes, define leadership behaviours and spend time shaping strategy and culture. Yet despite all that investment, many organisations still struggle to turn ambition into consistent performance.

After more than 30 years working with organisations, I've come to believe the problem often isn't leadership.

It's management.

Where Strategy Lives or Dies

Every strategy has to pass through one critical layer before it reaches the frontline.

Managers.

They're the people who translate strategy into everyday decisions. They set expectations, coach performance, build accountability, lead change and create the experience employees have every day.

When managers have the confidence and capability to do those things well, organisations move faster, adapt more quickly and consistently deliver better results.

When they don't, even the strongest strategy begins to lose momentum.

Management Development Needs a Shift

Perhaps the biggest problem isn't that organisations don't invest in management development. It's how they invest.

Too much management development still focuses on teaching models and theory.

Not enough focuses on building the confidence to make decisions, hold difficult conversations, coach people, lead change and deal with the real challenges managers face every day.

Managers don't become better because they've attended a course.

They become better because they've had the opportunity to practise, apply, reflect and receive support as they build new habits.

That's the shift I believe management development needs.
