LMA Diploma 2024 - 25 - Inspiring Leadership Follow-Up

It was great to work with you during the Inspiring Leadership workshop at St George's Park.

Here are some reminders of what we explored during the day.

The leadership/management distinction

This distinction is particularly important for those of you who are in roles where you are looking to lead a culture or deliver a broader remit than on-the-grass coaching.

The top four characteristics that followers want from leaders

This remains the most useful leadership research around in my experience. If you want to be an even better leader and be perceived as so, make it your mission to demonstrate these characteristics consistently.

Being an authentic leader

Remember that the number one characteristic focuses on authenticity, congruence and the degree to which you 'do what you say on the tin'.

Be crystal clear on your answer to the question, 'What do I stand for as a leader?'. Ensure that you're clear on your values and, if your club or organisation has a set of espoused values, that you have found links between your personal values and those club values.

Leading through state

The ability to manage your own states and lead others' states is the single most underutilised skill in the leader's toolkit.

Remember how states are created, that you are in charge of your emotions, that your state has the biggest influence over the state of your people, that you can change your emotional state in a heartbeat and that no states are bad, but some states are more and less useful when you're trying to achieve a specific outcome.
