Have you ever wondered why your attempts at influencing certain people (your boss, your peers, your team) just doesn’t seem to work all the time?
It could be that you're coming from a completely wrong viewpoint, that viewpoint being your own. Is it time to consider influencing by wearing other people’s shoes and fully understanding the pathway that they are following?
Don’t guess what they’re thinking, ask them
The term ‘perspective taking’ is often used to explore and evaluate another person's point of view by attempting to replicate their thoughts, feelings and position on a certain subject. In short, to effectively influence somebody, don't try to guess what they’re thinking. Simply ask them by explaining your outcomes and gaining their point of view.
Explore the common ground
Start by exploring the common ground that both of you are standing on. Ask questions about their key drivers, goals and required outcomes. Where do you currently see eye to eye? How could a collaborative approach allow you to both reach the goals you're aiming for?
Think win-win
Effective influencing should result in a win-win for both parties. While you’re achieving your outcome, the other person should also have a full understanding of the WIIFM (what's in it for me). The benefits that you both receive will inevitably result in reciprocation for future collaborative working. As a result, your level of influence will only increase as time moves on.
