Gravitas - one question you can ask to increase yours

Gravitas - seriousness and importance of manner, causing feelings of respect and trust in others (Cambridge Dictionary).

If you are given feedback that you need to increase your gravitas, you have probably asked yourself two questions.

  1. What exactly is gravitas?

  2. How on earth do I increase it?

Thanks to the definition above, number one is taken care of (it's a pleasure).

The second can be more taxing.

After all, you're already an expert in your field.

People come to you for the answers to incredibly complex technical or operational questions.

The challenge is that managerial gravitas and leadership gravitas are two different skill sets.

So, if you want to start building leadership gravitas, here's a great question to ask your peers and even your senior leaders at any appropriate moment.

"Where does this fit into the strategy?"

This is powerful for three reasons.

  1. It shows that you are thinking about strategy

  2. It shows you care about focusing on what is going to deliver strategic results

  3. Perhaps more importantly, it creates the perception that you have strategic expertise (whether you have or not)

In summary, having studied strategy and leaders' understanding (or otherwise) of it for almost two decades, I can assure you a solid understanding of strategy will always buy you gravitas and credibility.
