From Manila with Love: Reflecting on World-Class Leadership

I’m writing this from a poolside table in one of the world’s most spectacular cities. It’s a privilege. But the location isn’t the only thing that made this week special.
I've worked with thousands of groups over the past 20+ years, and this one is right up there with the best. They didn’t just turn up. They leaned in. They challenged me, each other, and the content. They weren’t just interested in the tools; they applied them immediately to their teams and clients. That’s where the magic happens. When I'm working with a group like this, it is impossible for me not to learn as they do. So here are three powerful reminders from three incredible days with a high-performing group of senior execs:
1. Alignment at the top defines the customer experience
If your executive team is aligned with each other and with their direct reports, you’re moving with momentum.
If not, you're dragging dead weight through the organisation. The guest or client will feel the difference.
2. Similarity matters more than difference
Yes, it’s important to understand different cultures, personalities, and perspectives. However, too many leaders over-focus on differences. In reality, any good group of good people has more in common than they think. Focus on that, and you build a connection fast.
The best leaders are always ready to learn. This group is responsible for billions of dollars of revenue. They walked into the room determined to learn something that would help raise the bar.
3. The best leaders are the most open to growth
These leaders are responsible for billions in revenue. But every single one walked into the room hungry to learn. Status didn’t get in the way of curiosity. And that’s why they’ll keep winning.
